When you look at a material probably the first thing you will notice about it is overall diffuse colour of the colour.   Basic colour can be provided in the Material Lab, but for realistic textures the answer lies in the way colour information is generated within the DTE texture components.

While there are a broad range of colour modes, inevitably some are more useful than others.   The tutorial explains their roles and draws special attention to the most useful.
